About our Online Classes



When we launched The Academy For The Study Of Religion (ASR) in January 2018, we made it clear, as can be seen elsewhere on this website, that our aim was:

“to seek to advance the understanding of the links across religion, economy, and society. ASR provides an open platform dedicated to facilitating easy access to education, learning and study of religion, faiths and belief systems that exist throughout the world, and understanding how these systems are interwoven in the fabric of many social norms, values, attitudes, behaviours and habits among various groups.”

OBJECTIVES

  1. To present the class material from an academic and historical perspective that is articulated with references from creditable sources
  2. To provide adequate time for group discussion, a question and answer segment and individual evaluation
  3. To ensure adherence to the standards established by the Jamaica Tertiary Education Commission (J-TEC) for certification and subsequently for accreditation by the University Council of Jamaica


Online Class Schedule



We are ready to fulfil this central aspect of our mission with the presentation of classes. Each class will be offered once weekly in a two-hour session for ten consecutive weeks.

There may be occasional webinars offered to supplement the class presentations if there is a sufficiently strong request for them to be offered and there is agreement on their time of presentation.

All our classes and any webinar that may be offered, will be presented on the Microsoft 365 Teams platform.

All class sessions will feature the following format:

- Class presentation
- Break out into group discussions
- Plenary presentations from the groups
- Question and Answer
- Class Evaluation

Our flagship programme is the “Introduction to The Study of Religion”.

​The course will be delivered online for 10 weeks with each class session lasting for two hours. Additionally, webinars that seek to give deeper exploration of the subject matter will be offered every four (4) weekends for two (2) hours. Webinars are for participants who are interested in discussion and further elaboration of the material presented the preceding four weeks.


PURPOSE


The purpose will be to present the 12 religions recognized by Academia from a historical perspective. As such, doctrinal and denominational issues will not be addressed as its aim is to present material of a historical and academic nature from clearly identified sources


OBJECTIVES


  • To offer participants insights into the function of religion in the lives of individuals and the ways in which this function is served through collective adherence to beliefs and tenets
  • To examine the factors that give rise to religions
  • To discuss the enduring nature of religions


METHOD


Since the course will be delivered online, registered participants who are unable to attend a session, will be able to access the material of the missed session a minimum of 24 hours after its delivery.

The Jamaican dollar rates per session are as follows:

JMD$5,000 per person

Cost for the entire course (10 sessions): JMD$50,000 per person

JMD$45,000 for groups of ten persons or more


Please note that all persons in a group must be registered at the same time. The main applicant should list all group members in his or her email. Payment should be made by one credit card or debit card for all group members.

REFUND POLICY



Refunds for paid registrations will be given as indicated below:

1. Requested 24 hours or more before the start of classes: 100% of payment

2. Requested after one class: 90% of payment

3. Requested after two classes: 70% of payment

4. Requested after three classes: 50% of payment

5. Requested after four or more classes: 0% of payment
